Bomb Island is 12 acres of land in the middle of Lake Murray that serves as North America’s first purple martin [a species of swallow] sanctuary and its largest roosting site. Formerly known as Doolittle Island, the landmass was renamed thanks to WWII pilots’ use of it and surrounding islands for bombing practice. Today, Bomb Island is known for being “bombed” by close to a million purple martins that migrate there almost every summer; watching the birds return to their roosts every evening following a full day of foraging is quite an awe-inspiring sight!
