CONROE NEWS ARTICLE.
A new boating country club has hit Lake Conroe with an alternative way to enjoy a boat on the water without having to buy one.
The Nautical Boat Club opened about three months ago at Pier 105 on Marina Drive located just past McDonalds off Texas 105. Instead of buying a boat, the members pay monthly dues that give them access to a new fleet of eight boats and free water toys not only in Conroe all year long, but its 18 locations nationwide.
“It’s actually comes out to a third less than owning your own boat without the hassle,” Lake Conroe Nautical Boat Club Owner Frank Van Zanden said. “You own a boat, you have one boat. Here you have access to five different types of boats.”
After choosing the right package for their wants and needs, a member calls in advance to make a reservation for any one of the boats. All of the boats are 2019, brand new models, from six different top-of-the-line manufacturers, including Mastercraft and Cobalt. The fleet is about 22-25 feet long and includes two competition wakeboard/surf boats with upgraded sound systems, double-decker party boats with a slide, sports boats with wake tower, luxury tri-toons, and fishing/fish and cruise tri-toons — which are pet friendly.
Then, the members request the equipment needed–such as for life jackets, tubes, skis, wake boards, and more–for any number guests up to the boat’s capacity. The club will have it all ready to go when the member arrives at the marina.
“You show up and within five minutes, you’re out on the lake having a good time,” said Frank Van Zanden’s son Nik, who manages the club.
While the fleet is kept fresh with new boats every 2-3 years, in the case of a maintenance problem or damage endured such as by debris, the club has options for additional insurance much like renting a car for the member, who will not be responsible for the full cost of the boat. The club can also take another boat to the member on the water so that the fun is not interrupted. The club also works with the nearby Pier 105 master mechanic and a tow boat on the lake. The members are required to complete a two-hour boating safety training.
When its time to leave, the member is simply asked to refuel the boat. While boat owners may have the responsibility of maintenance, security, and clean up after fun in the sun, these members can head on home with their guests and leave it to the club to take care.
“You can jump off with your friends and go home,” Nik Van Zanden said. “You just need to bring money for gas and a cooler, we will take care of everything else.”
There are four package categories with platinum and gold levels that require an initiation between $2,100-$4,000 and a monthly payment between $195-$395 a month.
According to a cost comparison from the club based on a $60,000 boat, the club estimates a boat owner may pay about $13,000 initial capital costs and $1,435 in total monthly expenses. A member is estimated to pay $3,400-$5,000 in initial capital costs and about $360-525 total monthly expenses.
Headed toward a slip, Clay Burgess said he has been a member for two months and traveled about an hour from Cypress to the Lake Conroe club.
“I want to get out on the lake right now,” Burgess said excited. “My girlfriend’s dad has a boat and I think he pays almost what I pay just to store the boat. I think it’s awesome is that we get to take out different stuff all the time. I’ve almost taken out everything out now.”
Van Zanden retired in February from the airline industry and was a club member at Lake Travis in Austin. Nik, enjoyed the club so much that he worked at the Austin location before the two decided to open the business in Conroe.
The investment in the franchise required half a million dollars for the fleet alone, Frank Van Zanden, who is considering opening a club in Clearlake, said. But he believes it will be worth it, noting that the Conroe location already has 26 members. He hopes to add more boats to the fleet in the future as well.
“We just loved the variety, so we sold the house, moved here and decided to start a new life,” Frank Van Zanden said. “I think there is a big future here in Lake Conroe and Houston itself.”

AUSTIN, Texas – Nautical Boat Club® proudly announces the grand opening of Nautical Boat Club® – Montgomery – the company’s seventeenth national franchise, and the first location for Greater Houston.
“We’re thrilled to be launching Nautical Boat Club® – Montgomery, out on clear, clean Lake Conroe,” effuses owner and operator Frank van Zanden. “With Boating Country Clubs® already thriving in Dallas-Fort Worth and in Austin, it’s about time Houstonians have the opportunity to experience the ultimate in boating ease, affordability, and fun!”
Founded more than two decades ago, Nautical Boat Club® was a pioneer in the boat-club business. The company’s Boating Country Clubs® are a simple alternative to buying a boat: for about one-third of the cost of purchasing a single boat, members get unlimited use of a diverse selection of brand-new boats, all-you-can-use free water toys, and the convenience of valet boating service. Monthly dues cover all expenses except for gas – including insurance, maintenance, and slip fees.
“For our members, a day out on the water is as easy as 1-2-3,” Van Zanden affirms. “You make a reservation for the boat you want and arrive at the marina at your reserved time. The boat you’ve chosen will be clean, fueled, and loaded with whatever water toys you request; you just hop in, turn the key and go! Once you’re done, you gas up, return your boat, and head home – with your day well-spent and some lifelong memories, too.”
Van Zanden originally joined as a Club member in Austin, where he loved the organization so much that he and his son, Nik – who became assistant manager at Nautical Boat Club® – Lakeway – decided to invest even further. Now, the father-son team is embarking on a new adventure as they introduce Greater Houston to the benefits of belonging to a Boating Country Club®.
“Nautical Boat Club® – Montgomery is opening at the Pier 105 Marina, the closest covered marina to Interstate 45 with the deepest public launch,” notes Van Zanden. “Pier 105 has been serving folks for more than forty years, and the marina is just wrapping up some exciting renovations; it will be ready for a full boating season with a fresh, new look, and some new elements and services. Our members will have premium access to Lake Conroe’s restaurants and bars, beautiful vistas, and fun activities!”
All Boating Country Club® members receive unlimited boat use, access to a full fleet of fabulous boats, guaranteed reservations with an availability rate over 97%, complimentary use of water toys, premium dockside valet service, and reciprocal guest privileges at all Nautical Boat Club® locations nationwide. As further incentive, Nautical Boat Club – Montgomery is offering a special bonus for those who act promptly: The first 50 members at the new location will receive Charter Memberships – and will never have to pay an annual renewal or rejoin fee.
“Now is the time to join Nautical Boat Club – Montgomery,” Van Zanden concludes. “We invite Greater Houston’s boating enthusiasts and wannabes to call and come for a tour today – the boats are shiny, the lake is full, and getting out on the water is now easier, more affordable, and more fun than ever!”
