Bomb Island is 12 acres of land in the middle of Lake Murray that serves as North America’s first purple martin [a species of swallow] sanctuary and its largest roosting site. Today, Bomb Island is known for being “bombed” by close to a million purple martins that migrate there almost every summer; watching the birds return to their roosts every evening following a full day of foraging is quite an awe-inspiring sight!
